With the Social Universe program and cycle, discover the times and challenges imposed upon the burgeoning Catholic Church in the American land, through the eyes of the founding bishop François de Laval. With him, learn more about the details of the Atlantic crossing, the education system, the economy, and more.  Meet a few of his contemporaries, such as the Native Americans, Louis XIV, Frontenac, Marie de l'Incarnation and Catherine de Saint-Augustin.

The Blessed Founders


Within the Social Universe program, meet the three founders of Catholic Church of Canada: Marie de l'Incarnation, founder of the Québec Ursulines, Catherine de Saint-Augustin, spiritual founder of Hôtel-Dieu Nurses, and François de Laval, first the bishop of Québec.


Discover the lifeworks of these founders who have marked the social and religious society of Québec.

Within the Social Universe program given to 4th grade classes of Québec, the pupils find out the founders of New France.  François de Laval, first bishop of Québec, is among these.

Since 2006, the guides of the Centre d'animation François-de Laval go from school to school in Québec to make known this character of Québec history.


Among the activities are a PowerPoint presentation, disguise in New France Costumes, object manipulation, François de Laval's flag and coat of arms, gift drawing, and more!


Schools that visit the Centre can discover the Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica-Cathedral, François de Laval's funeral chapel, his tomb, and the underground cemetery where were buried past bishops for no extra charge.

Immerse yourself in 17th Century Old Québec and walk the very grounds used by other founders like Champlain, Frontenac, Talon, Marie de l'Incarnation and Catherine de Saint-Augustin.
